In the spring of 1997, the Danish Army, represented by the Army Technical Service, issued a comprehensive Request for Proposal together with specifications for an armoured personnel carrier. Intentions was to replace the Unimog 416 and the MAN 8.136 in the Danish Reaction Brigade with a wheeled APC.
At the same time, the Army Technical Service requested the bidders to put one fully equipped vehicle each at their disposal for a thorough test and evaluation, which then took place in all areas of Denmark during the months of August until October of 1997.
The 3 combatants were an updated version of the German Fuchs, Piranha III from Mowag in Switzerland (known from the delivery of the
Eagle to the Danish Army) and SISU XA-201 from Patria Vehicles (former SISU) in Finland.
Final contract was given by the end of 1997 with initial deliverance of 22 vehicles by the end of 1998.
