A number of Leopard 2A5 tanks were prepared for desert warfare in 2006/2007 in order to be prepared for deployment to Afghanistan. They were actually deployed in 2007, and are operational in the Helmand Province supporting both Danish and British troops on the ground.
Around mid 2008 the tanks were issued a a Bar Armor Kit to increase the protection level of the vehicles.
